Hacienda Tamarindo is a Spanish-style inn located on a hilltop in Esperanza on Vieques Island. The hotel has panoramic views of the Caribbean Sea, including the Cays in Esperanza Harbor, with some of the most dramatic sunrises and sunsets Vieques has to offer.
Many people remember the hotel from its beginnings as a local restaurant and "dance hall" before being transformed in 1995 by owner Linda Vail, a commercial designer. Vail created, furnished, and decorated Hacienda Tamarindo using a lifetime's accumulation of art, antiques, and collectibles with plenty of imagination and creativity.
Hacienda Tamarindo takes its name from the 250-year-old Tamarindo tree that rises three stories through the Lobby's atrium and canopies over the second-floor dining room. The property consists of two buildings comprising 10,000 square feet, including 15 guest rooms and a 2000-square-foot penthouse. The entire property is serviced by broadband wireless, and all but two units are air conditioned while all have ceiling fans.
Common spaces surround the first-floor lobby atrium area, including a full-service honor bar for guest convenience, as well as an air conditioned living room and library.
Nestled in the center of the guest rooms on the second floor is a fully-equipped kitchen and dining area that seats 40. A made-to-order, full American breakfast is Included in the room rate. The kitchen and dining room are fully permitted to be a full service restaurant.
The first floor houses seven guest rooms; the second floor houses eight guest rooms; and the third floor houses the 2000-square-foot penthouse with multiple outdoor areas for viewing the Caribbean, the cays of Esperanza, and the rolling hills.
One of the most serene spots on Vieques is at the beautiful swimming pool overlooking the Caribbean and surrounded by tropical gardens. The pool measures 20 feet by 40 feet, with full depth, and has a gazebo on one end for relaxing in the shade.
The large penthouse covering the third floor of the hotel is currently occupied by the owners and has been a favorite dinner spot for those lucky enough to get an invitation. The generous apartment includes a large bedroom opening to a balcony and the Caribbean Sea as well as the master bathroom fitting for an owner with plenty of closet space and inlaid marble counters and shower.
Hacienda Tamarindo has been featured in many national magazines and newspapers, including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, The Columbus Dispatch, The San Juan Star, El Nuevo Dia, Caribbean Travel and Life magazine, Coastal Living, Second Home, and Budget Travel -- all testimonies of the success the owners have created.
